Blood, saliva, urine, mail-in kits, and now wrist-worn sensors. They are not competing versions of the same measurement. They answer different questions, at different costs, on different timescales.

The row that surprises people is urine. A 24-hour collection is genuinely useful for total output, and it discards the timing information completely, which is exactly what a rhythm question depends on.

Cortisol is not a fixed quantity. It follows a steep daily curve, peaking shortly after waking and falling to near its floor around midnight. A result at 8 a.m. and a result at 11 p.m. from the same healthy person are supposed to look completely different.

A cortisol number without a timestamp is close to meaningless, and comparing your result to a friend's, or to a range you found online, is not a valid comparison unless the collection times match. Best time to test cortisol works through each case.
Search volume for that phrase has grown sharply, largely because people who use continuous glucose monitors are asking the obvious follow-up question. The honest answer today is that there is no household cortisol meter in the sense of a glucose meter you can buy at a pharmacy.
What exists is mail-in saliva kits, which are real measurements with a lab delay, and wrist-worn continuous sensors, which are a newer category. The Auromone Curve is in that second category. It depends on the question being asked. Morning sampling is used when the concern is insufficient cortisol; late-night sampling when the concern is excess. Because the daily curve is steep, the hour is part of the result rather than a detail.
It varies by country, method, and whether a clinician ordered it. A single lab test is generally the cheapest route, multi-point at-home profiles cost more, and continuous monitoring is a device purchase with an ongoing sensor cost. See cortisol test cost.
No. Mainstream smartwatches and rings estimate stress from heart rate, which is a different signal on a different system. None of them measure the cortisol molecule.
